Ankara is backkkkk!
Well did it really go on break? I think so, in a way. Some 10 years ago, it was common to have Ankara chosen as asoebi. Nobody minded. 6 yards of Ankara plus half of the big gele( not sego) gave a complete asoebi package. No hassles, you tell people to pay 3k or so and with plenty “Jollof rice” at the party, everyone will go home smiling.
I don’t know who changed the destiny of Ankara. Maybe Facebook, maybe Instagram. Suddenly, Ankara fabric seemed too razz or too cheap for asoebi. If someone gave you Ankara, some people will simply change it to wrapper to back their babies and ask instead for lace fabrics which have been shining in all their glory. You name it; Dry lace, Cord, Metallic, Organza, Guipure, the list is endless and the styles they are sewn in makes the competition stiffer.
Well, this is 2016. Thank God for the same social media which has pushed Ankara from the back of the pack to compete with it’s other seniors. I think once your style is on point, nobody bothers if you are wearing Ankara or the most expensive fabric in the room. The Prints have it now. So get your slay game on.
So dear sisteh, the next time your friend tells you to pay 35k for asoebi, if you don’t feel like it, don’t sweat. Enter Oshodi market. There are different colours and patterns. You will be confused. Buy your Ankara fabric and make sure your Fashion Designer gives you one “badass” style that will make you the belle of the ball. Even the bride can like to wish her Reception dress was made from Ankara.
