There’s no denying Alicia Keys is a pretty powerful woman. She’s insanely talented, warm and friendly. Basically, we thought we couldn’t love her more, but now she’s decided to stop wearing makeup as part of a journey towards empowerment for herself.

If you have been watching The Voice, you will know that sans makeup, Alicia looks even more beautiful. Her skin is crystal clear and it has that infamous ‘glow’ that we always hear about.

Alicia wowed X Factor viewers on Sunday night after appearing on the show completely bare-faced to perform her new song, Blended Family. Twitter users were quick to praise her incredible skin, and many were left wondering how the 35-year-old looked so flawless, sans-makeup.

Well we can thank W magazine because they pinned down Alicia’s makeup artist Dotti, to find out exactly how she looks so bloody good.

So apparently the key to that glow is in your freezer right now, as Dotti explains. “We’re doing a lot of ice work to tighten skin, bring the blood to the surface. To basically give it the pop that you need. I stick a jade roller in ice, so it’s basically freezing when I roll it over her skin. I really, really work into all those areas where I want blood and water and energy brought to the surface. It brings her skin to life, it practically makes her skin say, ‘Hi. I love you.'” BTW, if you’ve never heard of a ‘jade roller’, it’s a facial massager that has a pure jade stone. Jade has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to help filter toxins and clear the lymph system.

“On some days, I’ll look at her skin and say, ‘You need cucumber today,’ so I’ll grate a full cucumber, then place the pulp no higher than her brow bone and no lower than her under-eye bone, not going near sensitive parts of the eye. If we’ve got time, I’ll put the pulp all over her face until it draws the heat out of the skin and bring the blood to the top. That’s what most of the cooling agents do.”

Dotti swears by the use of facial oils. “People get freaked out about oils. They think if they’ve got oily skin they don’t want oil, but yes you do!

Yes, sometimes when Alicia is on the telly she does wear a teeny-tiny bit of makeup as Dotti explains. “Compared to the world of makeup, there is minimal. She’s already powerful to look at, with those amazing Cleopatra-shaped eyes, and now we get to see them!” As part of her minimal makeup routine, Dotti will sometimes fill Alicia’s brows with individual lashes to make them appear fuller, or enhance her freckles with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer.

Writing on Lenny Letter, Alicia said “Women are brainwashed into feeling like we have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect. One of the many things I was tired of was the constant judgment of women. The constant stereotyping through every medium that makes us feel like being a normal size is not normal, and heaven forbid if you’re plus-size. Or the constant message that being sexy means being naked.”

“Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me.”
