This Airline Is Grounding 130 Crew Members for Being Out of Shape
After giving 600 of their crew members a six-month deadline to slim down, Air India is grounding 130 workers who weren’t able to make the required weight, declaring them permanently unfit for aircraft duties, according to The Telegraph. They’ll be assigned to ground jobs, while fitter workers will be assigned to aircraft duties.
While the company gauged their employee’s fitness using body mass index, a formula that incorporates height and weight to assess to body fat, the airline says they’re not discriminating against workers for being fat. Instead, they say they’re concerned that overweight crew members aren’t fit enough to respond quickly in emergency situations.
